What the Duck! - Workology

What the Duck! - Workology What the Duck?! I am a Philadelphia Eagles fan. Since Coach Charles “Chip” Kelly took over as head coach in 2013, my dedication to the team has been tested on multiple occasions. The most recent test came last week when we learned that the team’s best offensive player, LeSean McCoy, would be traded for a Kiko Alonso. WTDuck! It appears that he is using his power and influence selecting and coaching the team irresponsibly. What he is doing reminds me of how kids pick teams for a school yard kickball game: familiarity, popularity, and likeability over talent. I’ve seen first and second-hand in my workplace many of the undesirable characteristics that are being attached to Coach Kelly. So, I asked myself, are the attributes of a good team the same on or off the field? Yup! What the Duck?! They have shared goals. I’m pretty confident that every player and fan shares the common, singular goal of wanting their team to get to and win the Super Bowl. Outside of professional sports, the goals are more varied and project-oriented but must be shared, nonetheless. When faced with the task of building a team in your workplace, be aware of potential team member’s competing goals that will ultimately cause bad conflict. Every team member should be aware of, understand, and commit to their role in achieving defined team goals. Team members have emotional intelligence. Philadelphia is approximately 68% non-white,  so how does one justify releasing and trading the top offensive players in favor of a racial slur slinging, disingenuous, entitled brat? (That was a rhetorical question.) In addition to being technically skilled and talented, team members must also possess interpersonal skills that enable them to express themselves with judicious emotional maturity. Often times, this attribute is exhibited most by the subordinate group to the point that it becomes burdensome and overlooked by the dominant group.   In those cases, it takes someone from the dominant group, regardless of whether they are the numerical majority or minority, to identify and correct the deficiency. If you’ve ever worked in a semi-private, junior executive suite (cubicle) environment, you can attest to the fact it takes nothing short of an earthquake or natural disaster for you to tune in and ear-hustle the constant background noise…unless you are nosy and don’t have enough work to do.    I was a party to this type of disruption in 2005 when a co-worker said to a person on the other end of the phone, “I wish they would turn that ‘ j*gg@b’ music down”. To tell you that the needle scratched the record, a dark cloud of silence engulfed the area, and prayers of intercession went up simultaneously, would be an understatement.  Before going to the manager on behalf of those who were too angry to calmly articulate our disgust, “the peacemaker” asked the offender if she knew what the word meant.   Not realizing that he was giving her an opportunity to apologize and make amends, she lied and said no. You see, that word is so rarely uttered that if you are so bold as t o use it, you know exactly what it means. The young lady was encouraged to go home for the rest of the day and was promptly transferred to another project for the sake of the team. Our leader initiated these changes because he recognized that the absence of her emotional intelligence would hinder effective communication and collaboration on the team which were necessary for us to thrive and be successful. They are diverse. I once worked for a company that had a team comprised 100% of men from the same country. No, there was no language requirement that would have given native speakers a competitive advantage and absolutely no legal explanation for the gender composition.   What we had was a Program Manager who only felt comfortable with and leading a certain demographic.   When HR got involved, the manager was softly confronted about his apparent bias, given tools to help him be more inclusive, and presented diverse slates of qualified candidates with whom his openings could be filled. On the rare occasion when someone different was selected to interview, they would provide feedback that they were no longer interested in pursuing the opportunity because of things like:  team members having discussions in their native language during the interview and/or not feeling comfortable being the first to integrate the team. As you can imagine, the overall team performance was not stellar because creativity and innovation are best achieved when teams are comprised of people with different but complimentary talents. Needless to say, when the contract was up for rebid, another company won and the incumbent team was dismantled. While the aforementioned is an extreme case, some would argue that what Coach Kelly has done is also extreme. It’s a common and acceptable practice for a new organizational leader to hire and/or promote people with whom they are familiar and/or worked with in the past…not eight. Having so many Oregon Alumni on the team gives the impression that Chip doesn’t have a lot confidence in his ability to lead and further develop talent with different experiences. They trust the decision making process. Decisions that are made should build trust not discord. This is not to say that the intricacies of every decision should be vetted with every member of the team every single time. What is important is there is level of transparency so that when a leader has to make a hard or an unpopular choice, members can trust that it is best for the team overall. It was difficult to trust that the decision to release DeSean Jackson was what was best for the team and not decision rooted in the coach’s bias. Couple that decision with the most recent, trading a known entity who has performed well on the team for a linebacker who was injured most of the previous season, has me humming a Public Enemy song “…can’t trust it!”. Effective Leadership is what I consider, the foremost characteristic of a successful team because it is the key driver for the others.   I don’t consider Coach Kelly an effective leader. Sure, there is a shared goal of winning, but the goal can’t be achieved when defined expectations and decision seem to be disconnected from that goal.  Yes, they have enjoyed a 10-6 winning record for the two years he has been head coach, but I’m inclined to believe this is a sign of how bad the other teams are rather than how good the Eagles are. He should be able to replicate success (winning championships like he did while head coach of the Oregon Ducks) without replicating the same team.   Another area where I believe he is lacking is in showing consistency in reward, recognition, and reprimand. (Please refer to the Riley Cooper incident if you disagree.) Now, I don’t profess to be a football savant…I don’t even participate in a fantasy football league; but I did see Draft Day….that should count for something.  I do, however, know a little something about teams and I don’t like the way this one is being shaped. As a fan, albeit wavering I will continue to chant each week with enthusiasm, “Fly Eagles fly, on the road to victory…E-A-G-L-E-S, EAGLES!” and hope that I am proved wrong.

Some people actually say they call off sick instead of call in sick and were shook

A few people really state they 'cancel wiped out' rather than 'phone in wiped out' and we're shook A few people really state they 'cancel wiped out' rather than 'phone in debilitated' and we're shook It's authentic. This is the most noticeably awful influenza season in 10 years. The CDC detailed for the current month that there have been 10 new youngster passings and the most noteworthy influenza hospitalization rate since 2010. So as such, on the off chance that you are displaying any side effects of seasonal influenza or actually any infection, DO NOT GO INTO WORK. Get out wiped out. You are not a saint in the event that you go to the workplace when you essentially have the plague. So since you have acknowledged you are debilitated (this is frequently the hardest part) and will remain at home for the afternoon, it's an ideal opportunity to advise your boss.Looking for a rousing method to begin your day? Join for Morning Motivation! It's our inviting Facebook robot that will send you a speedy note each weekday morning to assist you with beginning solid. Join here by clicking Get Started! But this is the place it gets truly fascinating: Do you bring in, get out, or even cancel sick? It turns out there are a couple of various approaches to state something very similar, contingent upon where you live in these United States, and individuals have some truly solid suppositions about it.To 'phone in wiped out' is most popularOh, figures of speech! We chose to direct our own Facebook and Twitter surveys to try and clear things up.On our Facebook gathering, The Climb, we found that as of Thursday evening, 217 individuals (84.8%) had said they bring in, 35 (13.7%) said they get out, and four (1.5%) really confessed to utilizing cancel - truly, Indiana, Ohio, Missouri, and Michigan?'Call out wiped out' is a solid second, packed in the Mid-AtlanticTwitter was somewhat more diverse:Google Trends shows that most of the nation utilizes call in, and backs the Mid-Atlantic get out group, yet additionally shows extra little pockets in California, Texas and Florida. To 'cancel debilitated' is amassed in Ohio and western PennsylvaniaAccording to the StraightDope message board, can cel is utilized in Ohio and western Pennsylvania as well.People state, 'Jane canceled.' I can't remember anybody around here ever saying, 'Jane phoned in wiped out at the beginning of today,' kept in touch with one user. The board likewise recommends that cancel is the favored expression for Australians. But for certain individuals, bringing in is the best way to go: I've just heard and utilized 'phoned in wiped out.' If somebody let me know Jane canceled, I wonder what the heck they were discussing. Canceled what? The mutts? composed another user. The base lineWhether you 'bring in,' 'get out,' or 'cancel' when you are sick, the significant thing is to remain at home in such a case that you have this season's cold virus, you're likely infectious for much longer than you might suspect:

In decision analysis, a decision tree can be used to visually and explicitly represent decisions and decision making. So the outline of what Ill be covering in this blog is as follows. What is a Decision Tree?Advantages and Disadvantages of a Decision TreeCreating a Decision TreeWhat is a Decision Tree?A decision tree is a map of the possible outcomes of a series of related choices. It allows an individual or organization to weigh possible actions against one another based on their costs, probabilities, and benefits. As the name goes, it uses a tree-like model of decisions. They can be used either to dri ve informal discussion or to map out an algorithm that predicts the best choice mathematically.A decision tree typically starts with a single node, which branches into possible outcomes. Each of those outcomes leads to additional nodes, which branch off into other possibilities. This gives it a tree-like shape. There are three different types of nodes: chance nodes, decision nodes, and end nodes. A chance node, represented by a circle, shows the probabilities of certain results. A decision node, represented by a square, shows a decision to be made, and an end node shows the final outcome of a decision path.Advantages Disadvantages of Decision TreesAdvantagesDecision trees generate understandable rules.Decision trees perform classification without requiring much computation.Decision trees are capable of handling both continuous and categorical variables.Decision trees provide a clear indication of which fields are most important for prediction or classification.DisadvantagesDecision trees are less appropriate for estimation tasks where the goal is to predict the value of a continuous attribute.Decision trees are prone to errors in classification problems with many class and a relatively small number of training examples.Decision trees can be computationally expensive to train. The process of growing a decision tree is computationally expensive. At each node, each candidate splitting field must be sorted before its best split can be found. In some algorithms, combinations of fields are used and a search must be made for optimal combining weights. Pruning algorithms can also be expensive since many candidate sub-trees must be formed and compared.Creating a Decision TreeLet us consider a scenario where a new planet is discovered by a group of astronomers. Now the question is whether it could be the next earth? The answer to this question will revolutionize the way people live. Well, literally! There is n number of deciding factors which need to be thoroughly resear ched to take an intelligent decision. These factors can be whether water is present on the planet, what is the temperature, whether the surface is prone to continuous storms, flora and fauna survives the climate or not, etc.Let us create a decision tree to find out whether we have discovered a new habitat. The habitable temperature falls into the range 0 to 100 Celsius.Whether water is present or not?Whether flora and fauna flourishes? The planet has a stormy surface? Thus, we a have a decision tree with us. Classification Rules:Classification rules are the cases in which all the scenarios are taken into consideration and a class variable is assigned to each.Class Variable:Each leaf node is assigned a class-variable. A class-variable is the final output which leads to our decision.Let us derive the classification rules from the Decision Tree created:1. If Temperature is not between 273 to 373K, - Survival Difficult2.If Temperature is between 273 to 373K, and water is not present, - Sur vival Difficult3.If Temperature is between 273 to 373K, water is present, and flora and fauna is not present - Survival Difficult4.If Temperature is between 273 to 373K, water is present, flora and fauna is present, and a stormy surface is not present - Survival Probable5. If Temperature is between 273 to 373K, water is present, flora and fauna is present, and a stormy surface is present - Survival DifficultDecision TreeA decision tree has the following constituents :Root Node: The factor of temperature is considered as the root in this case.Internal Node: The nodes with one incoming edge and 2 or more outgoing edges.Leaf Node: This is the terminal node with no out-going edge.As the decision tree is now constructed, starting from the root-node we check the test condition and assign the control to one of the outgoing edges, and so the condition is again tested and a node is assigned. The decision tree is said to be complete when all the test conditions lead to a leaf node. The leaf n ode contains the class-labels, which vote in favor or against the decision. Now, you might think why did we start with the temperature attribute at the root? If you choose any other attribute, the decision tree constructed will be different.Correct. For a particular set of attributes, there can be numerous different trees created. We need to choose the optimal tree which is done by following an algorithmic approach. We will now see the greedy approach to create a perfect decision tree. The Greedy ApproachGreedy Approach is based on the concept of Heuristic Problem Solving by making an optimal local choice at each node. By making these local optimal choices, we reach the approximate optimal solution globally. The algorithm can be summarized as :1. At each stage (node), pick out the best feature as the test condition.2. Now split the node into the possible outcomes (internal nodes).3. Repeat the above steps till all the test conditions have been exhausted into leaf nodes. When you start t o implement the algorithm, the first question is: How to pick the starting test condition? The answer to this question lies in the values of Entropy and Information Gain. Let us see what are they and how do they impact our decision tree creation.Entropy:Entropy in Decision Tree stands for homogeneity. If the data is completely homogenous, the entropy is 0, else if the data is divided (50-50%) entropy is 1.Information Gain:Information Gain is the decrease/increase in Entropy value when the node is split. An attribute should have the highest information gain to be selected for splitting.Based on the computed values of Entropy and Information Gain, we choose the best attribute at any particular step.Let us consider the following data:There can be n number of decision trees that can be formulated from these set of attributes.Tree Creation Trial-1 :Here we take up the attribute Student as the initial test condition.Tree Creation Trial-2 :Similarly, why to choose Student? We can choose Inco me as the test condition.Creating the Perfect Decision Tree With Greedy ApproachLet us follow the Greedy Approach and construct the optimal decision tree. There are two classes involved: Yes i.e. whether the person buys a computer or No i.e. he does not. To calculate Entropy and Information Gain, we are computing the value of Probability for each of these 2 classes.Positive: For buys_computer=yes probability will come out to be :Negative: For buys_computer=no probability comes out to be :Entropy in D: We now put calculate the Entropy by putting probability values in the formula stated above. We have already classified the values of Entropy, which are:Entropy =0: Data is completely homogenous (pure)Entropy =1: Data is divided into 50- 50 % (impure)Our value of Entropy is 0.940, which means our set is almost impure.Lets delve deep, to find out the suitable attribute and calculate the Information Gain. What is information gain if we split on Age?This data represents how many people fallin g into a specific age bracket, buy and do not buy the product. For example, for people with Age 30 or less, 2 people buy (Yes) and 3 people do not buy (No) the product, the Info (D) is calculated for these 3 categories of people, that is represented in the last column. The Info (D) for the age attribute is computed by the total of these 3 ranges of age values. Now, the question is what is the information gain if we split on Age attribute. The difference of the total Information value (0.940) and the information computed for age attribute (0.694) gives the information gain. This is the deciding factor for whether we should split at Age or any other attribute. Similarly, we calculate the information gain for the rest of the attributes:Information Gain (Age) =0.246Information Gain (Income) =0.029Information Gain (Student) = 0.151Information Gain (credit_rating) =0.048On comparing these values of gain for all the attributes, we find out that the information gain for Age is the highest. Thus , splitting at age is a good decision.Similarly, at each split, we compare the information gain to find out whether that attribute should be chosen for split or not. Thus, the optimal tree created looks like :The classification rules for this tree can be jotted down as:If a persons age is less than 30 and he is not a student, he will not buy the product.Age(30) ^ student(no) = NOIf a persons age is less than 30 and he is a student, he will buy the product. Age(30) ^ student(yes) = YESIf a persons age is between 31 and 40, he is most likely to buy.Age(3140) = YESIf a persons age is greater than 40 and has an excellent credit rating, he will not buy.Age(40) ^ credit_rating(excellent) = NOIf a persons age is greater than 40, with a fair credit rating, he will probably buy. Age(40) ^ credit_rating(fair) = YesThus, we achieve the perfect Decision Tree!!Now that you have gone throughour Decision Tree blog, you can check out EdurekasData Science Certification Training.Got a question for us? 10 Steps to Prepare to Interview and Work Internationally

10 Steps to Prepare to Interview and Work Internationally More and more executives are thinking of searching for jobs overseas. The chance to travel, broaden their experience, and to challenge themselves is very attractive. As a Global Executive Career Coach and an eMBA Career Coach, Im asked how to prepare for an international job search and for working and living overseas. Here are 10 steps to prepare to interview and work internationally. Interview Preparation: In addition to having a great resume, hiring influencers for any position want to know that youll be a good fit. When youre going to do business in a different culture, that alignment of cultural and corporate fit becomes even more important. What will you have to demonstrate to an interviewer to be a great candidate for an overseas position? Show that you are a leader and an expert in your field. One of the best ways to accomplish this is through social media. From blogging, to posting, to tweeting, you can demonstrate that you have a great deal of wisdom and skills to offer employers in your industry. Show that you have experience solving common issues in your field, and that youre thinking about the long game, not just the here-and-now. For example, Dubai has native executives with the same skill set in your industry, so you have to stand out as an expat candidate worthy of pursuing an international appointment. Experience In The Country If you have any experience in the country in which youd like to work, now is the time to demonstrate it. If Japan holds your dream job, then every business interaction youve had in Japan or with Japanese companies is a demonstration that you can interact well with this particular culture and language. Even vacations can be valuable if you had significant language or cultural exchanges. Learn The Language and Culture Even if you havent done business internationally, you can prove your level of interest and adaptability by taking classes to learn the language and culture of the country in which youd like to work. Volunteer to be a conversation partner in English as a Second Language (ESL) classes for immigrants to your home country. Reach out to cultural organizations in your area to develop new opportunities for those from both cultures to meet and learn about each other. Showing that you are willing and eager to learn and adapt to foreign language, culture, and expectations is crucial to hiring influencers looking for a candidate who is willing to assimilate and grow in a new environment. Emphasize STAR Stories During interviews, make sure you emphasize STAR stories where you were successful at bridging understanding between diverse points of view, met challenges and resolved them by thinking outside the box, and where you inspired trust and confidence in others to engender productive teamwork. Working as an expat is challenging on both the personal and professional fronts, and requires a great deal of flexibility to overcome significant challenges. Expatriate Preparation: So what if you get the offer for the overseas job youve dreamed about? Are you ready to be an expatriate? There are things you should consider before you apply for the job, to make sure your overseas work experience is a positive one. Are You Ready To Move Overseas? As much as youve dreamed about the travel, the experience, and the personal and professional growth, are you really ready to move overseas? Do you have the personal and professional ability to learn and change in real time to meet the needs of your organization and colleagues? Do you have an adventure mindset and a proactive style, or are you simply interested in the advancement opportunities? You CAN advance without overseas jobs, but you CANT survive a cross-cultural job without meeting an endless series of challenges which force rapid growth and change. If the thought of that makes you uncomfortable, now is the time to change your focus. If it piques your interestread on! Cost analysis. Consider your potential compensation package within the frame of cost-of-living in your new country or city. Do your research on housing, transportation, and security costs (if applicable). Many companies and governments offer a Foreign Service Premium, or FSP, which is designed to adjust your salary temporarily to accommodate the difference in cost-of-living in your new area. Those moving from Toronto to Beijing might receive a 15% FSP. Moving to Caracas, Venezuela right now, you could expect a 60% or higher FSP and a security allowance, due to current political instability. One of your best resources is the expat community already in place. Reach out and ask them about the cost of housing, transportation, etc. Family. Are there education options near your new position that fit your childrens needs? In English-speaking countries thats not likely to be an issue, but in a city such as Portovelo, Ecuador or Surabaya, Indonesia, youll need to do some research. In large or capital cities like Beijing, there are often schools for children of embassy or consulate staff which may be open to expats. Also research to see if there are jobs or an expat community for your spouse, to keep them from feeling isolated. Special needs. If you or someone in your family has educational or medical special needs, make sure that any location you are considering has the infrastructure, personnel, and ability to meet those needs. Make certain you can find the right kind of heart specialist or autism classes where youre going. Special needs do not always preclude overseas work, but they do require extra planning and preparation to ensure a good, safe, fit for everyone. Engage a tax lawyer and/or accountant Engage professionals who are familiar with expatriate needs. I strongly recommend this step to every one of my clients thinking of working overseas. Youll be living, working, and earning in another country, while maintaining your original citizenship. The taxes and money management can get complicated quickly. At the end of your time overseas, you want to be left with comfortable savings and great souvenirs, not an enormous tax bill. Exit strategy. You need to plan for coming back home as well as planning for leaving. You and your family will adjust and thrive in a different culture, language, and become comfortable in your new home. At the end of the typical 3-year placement, how will you readjust to returning? And adjust to the compensation package without the FSP? Plan ahead to maintain your finances and your personal connections to accommodate that re-entry into your country of origin. If youre interested in a single placement and then a re-entry into your home country, its worth the effort to maintain active ties to your old community and business network.
